Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between public and private location services?
Public utility locators (811) mark only public lines on public property for no cost, while private services identify underground utilities on private property for a fee. The right choice depends on your project’s scope, complexity, timeline, and budget. For comprehensive, accurate results—especially on private land—private locating services may be essential.
What is the general rate of private location?
The base Rate is $250+ per hour for most private locators. This cost covers business overhead, skilled labor and experience, applied to satisfy all your private needs.
What kind of timeline can I expect?
The timeline for services to be provided will depend on a few factors.
Items such as the distance to the location and accessibility, availability of a technician, as well as the ability to narrow the scope of services are key. Our timeline will be expedited if public services have already rendered blueprints and a polygon of the work area.
Under normal circumstances, we will be onsite within 48 hours. Beyond 100 miles may require up to 72 hours. Pre-paid locates will guarantee first come, first served status and same day service.
What is a damage investigation and who needs it?
A damage investigation will identify who is at fault when damage has been caused on public property. Generally, this service is provided, for no cost, by a public works company whose focus is to clear their operators of any fault.
As a private locator, I would represent the contractor or private property owner. Our focus would be to determine if an error on the part of the public works locator led to damage caused by the private sector. This determination could provide the private sector with documentation and pictures that could save thousands of dollars in a legal dispute.
What is needed of me for a private locator to do work on my property?
The private locator needs a specific location and safe access to the proposed work area. We will need the address of the locate and GPS coordinates or a specific description of the area of work. If there are dangerous animals present, they need to be contained, gate codes supplied, or gates unlocked, and hazardous terrain conditions mentioned.
What type of contact information the locator need?
The locator needs to be able to contact the owner of the property as well as any relavent contractor
